Air leaks can cause your utility bills to skyrocket. It might be surprising, but even a few small openings, cracks, or gaps can lead to much higher bills. Even tiny gaps around doors or windows can let in a lot of cold air. In the winter, this forces your heaters to work much harder to keep your room warm.
In older buildings, you might notice holes in the walls, roof, or foundation. These holes could be big and obvious or so small you don't notice them. But both big and small holes have the same effect: they let out the heat that's supposed to stay inside.
When it's warmer outside, the situation reverses. To cool down your room enough, you'll need to leave the air conditioning on for longer periods and at cooler settings. This is because the cool air escapes through these openings and gaps.
At Sealcraft, we're experts at finding these air leaks and fixing them. By doing this, you could save 20%-30% on your electricity bill both in the winter and the summer.
Caulking is like a seal that closes up any gaps completely. It stops water from getting in, blocks chilly drafts of air, and even keeps pests out of a building. And not only that, caulking makes a building look better by covering up unsightly cracks, holes, and gaps.
When caulking doesn't work properly anymore, it needs to be taken out and replaced. As time goes on, the caulk won't do its job well. You'll start to see leaks and gaps getting bigger. This can cause more issues like higher utility bills, water coming in, and even harm to the building's structure because of that water.
Caulking is like sealing up gaps and joints to stop things from leaking in different buildings and pipes. Caulk is made from materials like latex, rubber, polyurethane, or silicone, sometimes even a mix of these. The kind of material used affects how good the caulk is – how long it lasts, how well it sticks, and if you can make it smooth or paint over it.
If your home is newly built, you won't need caulking for a year. It takes time for a new building to settle properly. But if your home isn't new, you should regularly check the caulking. It's good to redo it every five years. If you feel cold drafts in a room or your energy bills are higher than usual, it might be because of damaged caulk. You can reach out to us, and our inspector will come to see if the caulking is the problem. Caulking is usually easy to see – you might notice cracks, splits, or even air bubbles. If you spot any of these, just contact us, and we'll be happy to assist you.
You can actually do caulking even when it's colder than 40 degrees Fahrenheit outside. But before you start, think about the things you'll be caulking and the kind of caulk you're using. Some caulks don't work as well in really cold weather. If you can wait until it's warmer, that might be better. Our caulking inspector can give you the best advice after checking your building. Majestic Caulking Inc. is available all year round and works on projects when the temperature is between -20°C and +35°C.
At Sealcraft, we use top-quality caulking products that are really good for big jobs. The kind of caulk we pick for a project depends on what that project needs. Each type of caulk is made for a certain job. For example, some are great for glass and ceramic, while others work better on wood, brick, and concrete. There are even some that are best for metal surfaces. The kind of caulk we choose for a job also depends on things like how much moisture or heat it needs to handle. When we check out your building, we'll suggest the right product based on what needs to be sealed. Everything we use at Sealcraft works well for Canada's weather.
When you change your old windows for new ones, you'll see that the shiny sealant from the window maker looks fresh. But this nice look won't last. In a few months, it won't seem as new anymore. And the sealant won't work as well either. The stuff they use doesn't last as long as what we use at Sealcraft. That's why we suggest you redo the caulking on your windows, even if they're new.
Metal capping on windows is mostly for looks, not really for keeping things out. So, even if you have metal capping, your window might not be sealed up well. If you look closely, you'll see gaps between the wall and the metal. Under the metal, there's a line of caulking that you'd normally see on windows without capping. We make sure to seal these caps so that even the tiniest cracks are all sealed up tight.
People have two ways to deal with old caulking. Some think it's okay to just leave it. They put new caulking on top of the old one and let it go over the edges of the old caulking and onto the wall. But there's a problem with this method. The caulking line won't be strong enough, and less new material will be used. The old caulking can break off, and it might even pull off the new caulking. At Sealcraft Caulking, we do it differently. We carefully take out the old caulking, fix the gaps, and put in all-new material to fill them up completely.
At Sealcraft, we make sure that the caulking looks like the frame around it. But if you want a specific color, we're okay with that. Caulk comes in lots of colors and shades, and you can pick the one you like. There are also different finishes like satin, gloss, and semi-gloss. Some caulks can be painted over (not silicone caulk), while others can be mixed with latex paint to match your wall paint. So, if you want plain caulk that you can paint, that's an option too. You can even stain the caulk to match the wood color.
Silicone caulk works really well for bathtubs and sinks. It stops mold and mildew from growing and it's good with water. It also sticks really nicely to the smooth surfaces in your bathroom.
We know you're busy and don't want to disrupt your day. If we're working outside, you don't need to be there. Just leave gates and fences unlocked, and keep any potentially dangerous pets away from the work area. For your comfort, it's better if you're home while we work inside your house.
We try our hardest to finish the work on your home in one day if things go smoothly. But we can't promise that because the weather or unexpected issues might cause changes to the plan.
